You can not separate R. Rabus from her garden: a masterpiece in constant evolution never completed. A lesson in democracy, for the so-called “weeds” is only harmful when they threaten the fragile balance of the whole.
Renate is totally dedicated to the research and preservation of harmony that she has succeeded in passing on to Till and Leopold, to her environment, her family and friends … peace which she has not always known herself and which she desperately and vitally needs !
Hours, days, months, years of threads being crossed, entwined, piled up… What strange alchemy and what mysterious inner need can manage to transform us like this into spiders ? In order to capture what ? … Tiny or long stories, fragments of meditations, questions, neglect … There, in her workshop, engulfed in the strange torpor of embroidery, experiencing a kind of monastic retreat, the artist finds her energy … to fill us with wonder.
Before setting off to “travel in winter” the artist spent several years creating embroidered paintings of insects, amphibians and chameleons portrayed in their environment. Thousands of tiny knots form the animals and scenery, like pixels of infinitely varied colours. Like a plastic surgeon, she even imitates the relief of skin, wood, and grasses, by accumulating and modifying the interlacing threads of different thicknesses and materials … Most of these small creatures, including the toxic frog” Dendrobates Pumilio ”, are soon extinct, hence the loving fascination of the environmentalist for these innocent jewels that are victims of progress (which cannot be stopped, as everyone knows). Despite their hyperrealistic appearance, they are not photographic representations, but a multitude of inventions chasing anything that might resemble monotony or mechanical achievement. I know of no other artist, except perhaps Albert Yersin, having renounced to such an extent the spectacular and the sensational.
This “portrait-catalogue” blends several aspects of the artist, because this is how life is : the frog is inseparable from its habitat.
